How do I open a bank account?

What it is
An Italian bank account and IBAN, opened once you have your codice fiscale.
Why you need it
Not compulsory, but an Italian IBAN is required to receive a scholarship, and a local account avoids foreign card fees on everyday spending.
When
Once you have your codice fiscale. Many students open an account in the same weeks as the tessera sanitaria.
What you need first
- Your codice fiscale
- Passport, with your visa if you needed one
- Your university enrolment certificate
In Bari
- Your residence permit or its "ricevuta" (the receipt for your application), if you're a non-EU student
- Your certificate of residence, if you have one
Ask a student
Ask which bank they used and whether being a partner of the university actually made anything faster, since it is not guaranteed.
