How does healthcare work in Italy, and what do I do if I am ill?
What it is
How to get medical care once you are in the SSN: your medico di base for everyday care, a phone line for out-of-hours problems, and the "Pronto Soccorso" (emergency room) for a genuine emergency.
Why you need it
Knowing which of the three to use, and when, means you are not waiting at the wrong one, or paying full price for care the SSN would otherwise cover once you are registered.
When
As soon as you hold your tessera sanitaria. Register with a medico di base in your first weeks, so you already have one the first time you are ill.
What you need first
- Your tessera sanitaria, registered and active
- Your medico di base, once assigned
Ask a student
Ask which medico di base they use and how they actually reached them the first time they were ill, since the SSN process reads simpler on paper than finding your own doctor the first time round.
