How much money do I need to show, and how?

What it is
Evidence that you can support yourself financially in Italy, required for both the visa and, later, the residence permit ("permesso di soggiorno").
Why you need it
Neither the consulate nor the immigration office will proceed without it. It is checked twice: once for the visa, again for the permit.
When
Gather it before your visa appointment. Keep the same evidence, or a fresher version of it, ready for the permit application after you arrive.
What you need first
- A bank statement, a scholarship letter, or a sponsor's guarantee letter, whichever your consulate accepts
- Your visa application, since proof of funds is submitted alongside it

Ask which document their consulate accepted, since the accepted list is not published in one place and changes between consulates.
