How do I get my codice fiscale?

What it is
Your Italian tax code, "codice fiscale". A sixteen-character code that identifies you to every Italian office, on paper or on a plastic card.
Why you need it
University registration, the residence permit, a rental contract, a bank account, the health card and the ISEE all ask for it. Without it almost nothing else in your first weeks can be completed.
When
In your first week. It comes before the bank, the health card and the ISEE, and it is tied up with the residence permit application, so start those two together.
What you need first
- Passport, with your visa if you needed one
- Your address in Italy, even a temporary one
Ask a student
Ask which office gave them theirs and how long it took. It is the one step where the official answer and what actually happened differ most.
