How do I get an Italian SIM card?

What it is
A prepaid Italian mobile SIM, giving you a local phone number.
Why you need it
Nearly everything that follows expects an Italian number: the post office booking app for the residence permit, the bank, and the Questura's SMS collection notice all rely on it.
When
In your first days, before you start the residence permit application, since you will need the number for the booking app almost immediately.
What you need first
- Your passport, which every provider requires to register a SIM to your name

Ask which provider they used and whether they had any trouble registering it with just a passport, since requirements occasionally tighten.
