How do I get my ISEE?
What it is
The ISEE ("Indicatore della Situazione Economica Equivalente", the equivalent economic situation indicator) is a certificate of your family's economic situation, issued by INPS, the national social security institute.
Why you need it
Scholarships and other income-based benefits are decided on it, and it sets what you pay for services priced by income, such as a university canteen. Without one you are usually charged the top rate or excluded from income-based support altogether.
When
Get it as soon as you have a codice fiscale and the documents below. Prepare it well before any deadline that needs it, a scholarship application in particular, since it cannot be produced on the day.
In Bari
If your family lives in Italy or has income or assets here, your tuition is set by your ISEE (an index of your family's financial situation), and it's due by 15 December 2026. Late fees are 50 EUR until 31 January 2027, 100 EUR until 30 April 2027 and 150 EUR until 30 September 2027, and after that you pay the maximum. Without one, you pay the maximum.
If you're in the country-group system instead, you only need it to apply for ADISU and other need-based benefits.
What you need first
- Your codice fiscale, since the ISEE is issued against it
- Passport
- A family income certificate for the fiscal year two years before the academic year (2023 for 2025/26), authenticated in your country and carrying an apostille or equivalent stamp
- A certificate of family composition: every family member, their birth dates and their relationship to you, authenticated and stamped the same way
- Giacenza media, the average balance of an Italian bank account, only if you or your family held one before 2022
Ask a student
Ask which CAF they used and how long the appointment and the wait for the certificate took. It varies a lot between offices and time of year.
