Working while you study
Can I work while I study in Italy?
Scholarships and ISEE · step 5 of 5Checked Aug 2026
What it is
Part time paid work alongside your studies, either inside the university or in the wider job market.
Why you need it
It is one of the main ways to cover living costs beyond a scholarship or family support. How much you may work is limited by your residence permit ("permesso di soggiorno"), not by your course.
When
Once you are settled and, for most roles outside the university, once your Italian is usable. Look inside the university first if your Italian is still basic.
What you need first
- A residence permit, since it sets the limit on how many hours you may work
- A codice fiscale, which any employer will ask for
- Usable Italian, since most roles outside the university depend on it
Ask a student
Ask an international student with a part time job what the actual hour limit on their permit turned out to be, and how they found the work, since neither is written down in one place.
