What it is

The residence permit, "permesso di soggiorno", required for non-EU students staying in Italy longer than three months.

Why you need it

Without it you cannot legally remain past your visa's short-stay window. University enrolment, the health card and, later, a job all ask to see it.

When

The application must start within eight working days of arrival. Missing that window puts your legal stay at risk, so treat it as one of the first things you do after you land.

What you need first

Your proof of funds, already gathered for your visa
Your pre-arrival insurance, already gathered for your visa
Your passport, with your visa if you needed one

Your codice fiscale, which goes in the kit
A photocopy of every page of your passport, blank pages included
